Field Trip!

Over the break, I got to visit Good Vibrations in San Francisco. It’s a wonderful store with a very friendly, open atmosphere, and plenty of helpful staff to answer your questions. I focused on materials and packaging during the trip, as these are some of the next steps for my product development. In particular, ABS plastic with a “velvety” coating is something that I’d like to look into. I wonder whether this coating will still allow for a recyclable product in the long term? And how would its longevity compare to silicone?

I also saw some products which I had not encountered before, including the Vanity line by Jopen. This is an extensive series of well-considered silicone vibes in some very beautiful organic forms. Lovely! They have an intelligent control system as well- each button has an led which indicates whether it is on or off. Very clear.

Upcoming Term Presentations

A major aspect of working on a project of this depth is clearly communicating all of the insights you’ve found and the developments you’ve made to your peers, professors, and outside observers. This must always be done in as concise and intriguing manner as possible, in a way that directs participants to give you the kind of feedback you need to progress. In fact, I would suggest that we spend nearly the same amount of time developing our presentations and presentation materials as we do working on the actual project. I’ll be giving my term presentation on Wednesday December 15th at 3:45 pm. Form Iterations!

I’ve been working like mad for the past week to discover the right forms for the collection. We’re closing in on final forms (for the term anyway,) and I’m thrilled to be looking at new ways to make them interactive.  Some images:
